When you’re on the road with family, finding a good RV park can feel like striking gold. On a recent trip through Iowa, we stayed at the Des Moines West KOA Holiday, and I have to say—it checked almost all the boxes for us.
From the moment we pulled in, we felt welcome. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and that made a big difference after a long day of travel. You can tell they take pride in the place and care about the people staying there. It had that laid-back, “we’ve got you” vibe that instantly puts you at ease.
Parking was a breeze, which isn’t always the case with our rig. The spots were spacious and easy to get into, even with other guests around. My only real gripe—and it’s minor—is that the RV lots are gravel rather than concrete. Not a dealbreaker by any means, but something to keep in mind if you’re particular about that.
One of the unexpected highlights? The pizza! I know that might sound odd for a campground, but we ordered from their on-site kitchen, and it was honestly really good. Better than most roadside pizza we’ve had—and trust me, we’ve sampled our fair share across the states.
It was also quiet, which we really appreciated. We’ve stayed in places where it felt like we were camped next to a freeway or a party, but here it was peaceful. We all slept great, and the kid woke up excited to hit the playground, which was one of the best we’ve seen at an RV park. Tons of space, clean equipment, and a safe layout so we could sit nearby and relax while he played.
The whole atmosphere at this KOA had a family-friendly charm that made us feel right at home. If you’re ever passing through the Des Moines area and need a place to stay, I’d definitely recommend giving this spot a try.
We’ll absolutely be coming back.
